Background Information
SONO
was established on 15th may, 2008. Since the collapse of the
central government, the hope of the Somali people was worsening day
after day and getting into dire situations, including civil war and
droughts which affected the life of Somalis in both rural and urban
areas. The killing, robbery and human rights abuse became common and the
institutions to act against all these conditions diminished. Many
reconciliation conferences renewed the hope of Somalis, but finally
failed. Clan based conflicts became the ever permanent problem
affecting Somali people, despite all these problems, Somali peace loving
patriots stood for the establishment of this organization as to save the
nation.
The Somali
Nationalist Organization (SONO) wishes to welcome the constructive
opinions of the Somali Nation wherever they may be. SONO would welcome
any support from all our esteemed supporters. Therefore if you would
like to join us in our journey looking for a peaceful and prosperous
Somalia based on the principles of the SONO please join the increasing
family of SONO.
Somali
Nationalist Organization (SONO) is Somali patriotic union who has got
the same objectives based on Unity, justice and brotherhood. These peace
loving Somali nationalists in different parts of the world decided to
establish this union after they have seen that the gravely situation in
Somalia makes it necessary to have a body who can act and is capable
of bringing marked changes among the common people by conducting an
effective/productive awareness programs.
The Somali
Nationalists' Organization (SONO) is a social organization with the
objective of peace, SONO is free from any political persuasion,
self-interest and nepotism they have dedicated their time to safe the
nation, social welfare and general awareness.
SONO stands to support the Somalis
achieve survival, social development by working with national and
international organizations as well as governments to support effective
programs that will support achievement of SONO strategic goals. Somali
Nationalists Organization (SONO) is an organization based on the
protection of human rights, the recovery of the devastated Somali
economic, the participation of the Somali peace processes, the
establishment of awareness raising programs about the significance of
durable peace in Somalia. This means all of SONO's policies and programs
are rooted in Somali Nationalists' minds living worldwide.
The
organization opens to every Somali whose mission is to get peace and
development and it is not specific for specific group of people.

defined objectives based on the national interest and is free from any
political and religious organizations.

Mission
Statement
The mission
statement of SONO perceives its vision statement through:

unite the Somali people and strive to get peaceful coexistence and
general awareness.

promote the vision of the organization by creating offices through out
the world wherever the members of the organization are present.

To
contribute to the overall development with special emphasis on education
and eradicates illiteracy by opening educational centers getting a
curriculum based on our religion and to get higher education for the
young Somalis.

To
conduct seminaries to educate the children about their language, history
and define Somali culture.
ü
To
raise awareness programs to enhance patriotism and its value among the
Somali people.

To
rehabilitate the young generation who are culturally transformed in the
west and provide the proper guidance

Inaugurating new educational institutes and establishing Somali culture
based curriculum

Performing any progressive approach that builds up SONO’s
ambitions.
Organizational
objectives
The SONO has got a meaningful objectives based on
Patriotism justice and equality. The objectives are including;

unite all Somalis both in home and abroad and create harmony and
brotherhood.

create patriotism and cooperation among Somali people.

promote Somali culture, language and literature.

struggle against tribalism, illiteracy and segregation (partiality) of
Somali people.

encourage the Somalis to utilize their manpower, mind and show that
through cooperation they can reach peace, stability and prosperity.

contribute a peace, development and to support civil society.

assist the poor and displaced People across the country.
Strategy
The formation
of SONO provided the Somalis an intervention strategy to participate and
strive for the rescue of the abandoned country. The patriots'
participation in such organization would be employed as means of sharing
information, experiences, and lessons learned on the disastrous
tragedies during the two decades civil war and its elimination. Total
participatory bottom-up approach would be part of SONO's strategies.
Impact
It is very
probable that the vision, mission and specific organizational objectives
would lead the country to the formation of a recovered structure of
economy and free society. The attitudinal changes that SONO brought is
widely felt in the areas of humanitarian, peace and development
processes. The major indicators of this impact are:
1. Weekly
debates in the pal talk as well as TV/radio stations.
2. Production
and dissemination of peace toward the humanitarian security crisis in
the country.
3.
Participation of the organization in the Somalia reconciliation
processes, such as the recent Djibouti conference.
4.
Establishment of SONO Newsletter for the spread of nationalists'
expressions worldwide.
5. Decrease
of clan practices, then prohibit and eliminate.
Gender
Sensitivity
To consider
the current gender issue, a policy that can help SONO attain social,
political and economic improvements in the organization has been
carefully developed. Thus, SONO is committed to gender equity and the
capacity building of women is in its priority list in order to create
skillful female cadres. In line with these, SONO recruitment plan and
administrative procedures were adjusted for the purpose of enhancing the
job opportunities for women and poverty eradication process.
Organizational
Structure
The
organization has a structure through which its policies, strategies and
operations are implemented, which is following:
General
assembly:
The highest governing body of SONO articulates its vision, mission, and
objectives and approves its activities.
Executive
committee:
is responsible for the SONO's strategies to achieve the vision of the
General Assembly, for maintaining the organization's focus on its short
and long-term goals, managing its day to day activities, monitoring and
controlling its plans, resources and programs, measuring and correcting
its activities to ensure that they conform to plan.
Internal audit
and control: This committee elected by the general assembly and is responsible to
carry out overall organizational audit. Its duties are submitted to the
general assembly.
The
coordination office: implements the daily activities of the organization and
coordinate task forces under the guidance of the Executive Committee and
Chairperson.
Task Forces:
These task forces conduct assessments and make recommendations on the
design of the projects and implement the project activities.
At each of
these levels, there are links to provide for interfaces within the
structure. This is important for the purpose of participation of each
group at the next functional level for decision-making.

SONO tried to keep in contact with the international agencies involved
in other sectors in order to develop integrated strategic development
framework.
However, SONO
officials occasionally visit foreign countries to participate in
conferences, seminars and workshops to gain further experiences. The
organization also organizes study tours to both domestically and
neighboring countries for its members.
Sustainability
SONO look
forward to collaborate with other national/international agencies to
share experiences and gain the immediate needed institutional capacity
to respond effectively to the demands of its target groups.
Although, it
is difficult to predict when the organization will become financially
self-supporting, SONO is now working out plans towards this objective
and it might take several years to come, as the situation of Somalia
requires a long-term remedy.
